Talking Parrots PDF Print E-mail
Parrots, often called hook-bills for their hook-shaped beaks, of all sizes can learn to imitate human sounds – in other words, they can learn to talk. There is nothing as joyous as having your parrot speak to you!

The process of teaching a parrot to talk is very structured and requires some follow-through, but many parrots learn to talk very quickly if provided the right training. Advice abounds about talking parrots, and some of it is good advice.  However, why go through a trial-and-error process when you can have true facts from an experienced parrot breeder who has taught many parrots the skill of imitating human speech?

Will every bird talk?  No, some will not ever utter a word, no matter how hard you try. There are species of parrots more likely to learn the skill than others, but there is no guarantee that any specific bird will ever talk.  Even if your particular bird never talks, the bonding process of taming and attempting to teach talking skills will prove to be invaluable to both the bird’s wellbeing and the owner’s love of the bird.

Some birds that don’t learn to talk will learn to imitate other sounds such as whistles and noises they hear in the home.  Many who do learn to talk will learn other sounds as well.  The first goal is teaching speech skills, and if your bird doesn’t want to learn to talk, it will most likely bond to you to the point it will learn to make meaningful sounds and body language to communicate with you.

Some birds learn the meanings of words and learn to use them to get what they want when they want it.  If the owner teaches speech in context, by showing an item and then saying the name for it, the parrot may well learn to ask for objects or food items. These are truly talented birds, usually of the larger species, but it does happen.  Even a parrot that has only a small vocabulary can use those words to make itself understood.

If you want to teach your parrot to talk, be sure to follow this amazing series. In it you'll learn techniques that really work!
